Gloria Jean
Taylor
Mar 4, 1949 — May 6, 2024
Thomasville
When I come to the end of the road,
And the sun has set for me,
I want no rites in a gloom filled room
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little – but not for long.
And not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love that once we shared.
Miss me, but let me go.
It is with deep sadness and sorrow that Harrington Family Mortuary and Cremation Services announces the passing of:
Ms. Gloria Jean Taylor born to Columbus and Helen Revels Taylor transitioned peacefully on May 6, 2024, at the age of 75.
She received her early education at Magnolia High School. Upon graduating High school, she moved to Atlanta, where she furthered her education at Atlanta Area Technical College.
Shortly thereafter she developed a love for golfing, and became very proficient in the game. So much so that she went on to play on the Women's Mini Professional Tour, where she excelled as one of the best Black women golfers of her time. She was unable to obtain a sponsor on the Golf Tour and though disappointed, Gloria was a mover and shaker and decided to enlist into the Army. During her tenue in the Army, she excelled in many major accomplishments. Gloria, being a lifelong learner continued her education and went on to earn a BA Degree at Washington University, Alexandria Virginia.
Gloria continued her love of Golf, and would practice on a regular basis. In so doing she caught the attention of several High Ranking Officers, who invited her to play rounds of golf with them. After several years in the Army some of the officers that she golfed with, encouraged her to leave the Army and seek a position with the Department of Defense (DOD). After spending 16 years in Germany she returned to the US and continued her work with the Department of Defense in Washington, DC. Until her retirement.
Upon retiring, she returned home to Thomasville Georgia, and built a home on a 15-acre Pecan Orchad where she enjoyed nurturing and harvesting pecans. Gloria realized that all of her sisters loved to cook and she decided to open a very profitable restaurant and called it "SISTAHS".
After her health began to fail she parted with the restaurant business, sold her home, and moved in with her Sister, Christine. As her health continued to fail, she eventually moved into a Senior Living Facility where she remained until her demise.
She leaves to mourn her passing one brother Willie James Taylor (Linda) four sisters Mary Ellen Thomas, (Otis), Mary Louise Taylor Brown, Elisabeth Taylor Mitchell (Willie Joe), Christine Taylor Duncan, and a host of Nieces, Nephews, other relatives, and friends .
